The Strategy was launched in 2010 to naturally leverage the full breadth of the team's existing global research capabilities—the team has been investing in non-US markets for the past 25 years, adhering to the same philosophy and process established by team founder Mark Yockey at the inception of the Artisan Non-U.S. Growth Strategy in 1996.

Artisan Partners Global Equity Team portfolio manager Mark Yockey and CEO Eric Colson recently sat down for an exclusive conversation about Mark's pursuit of high value-added businesses with sustainable competitive advantages over the course of the Artisan Global Equity Strategy's 10 years.

A range of topics were discussed, including the global opportunity set, the team's research process, position sizing, the importance of a valuation discipline as a growth investor, investing in energy efficiency in the fight against climate change, opportunities in health care and other emerging long-term growth themes.

Sustainable Growth

Compared to companies focused on maximizing near-term metrics, the team believes companies with sustainable growth characteristics are more likely to align their products, services and corporate practices with broader, positive ESG considerations, such as environmental awareness, stronger employee relations and better corporate governance.

Corporate Engagement

During meetings with company management teams, company site visits and other correspondence, the team seeks to validate the consistency of business practices with management's disclosures and stated policies and engage on ESG issues—particularly corporate governance issues.

ESG Risk Review

In 2019, the team hired Refinitiv, an external data provider, to further enhance its ESG efforts. Refinitiv applies over 450 quantitative factors in evaluating and scoring companies along each of the E, S and G principles. These scores help the analysts and portfolio managers have a more informed discussion with management teams and provide a broader perspective on companies of interest. It also allows the team to better engage with companies to understand how they are positioned and how they plan to make improvements in areas of concern.
