Lead Portfolio Manager David Samra, in partnership with the Columbia Business School's Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing, recently hosted the 4th Annual Artisan International Value Stock Pitch Challenge at Columbia Business School (CBS).

The event is a great way for CBS and students enrolled in its Applied Value Investing program to exhibit the quality of their work. More importantly, it's another step in the preparation and process of developing students into value investors of the future.

David remembers how challenging it was to get started in the investment industry when he graduated CBS in 1993. The event is designed to help students meet this challenge via three critical arenas:

  • Process – researching and communicating what they have learned to experienced investment professionals
  • Resume Building – notable accomplishment for competing and being selected as a finalist
  • Networking – ability to exhibit their skills live in front of industry veteran judges that may lead to a career connection or position

As an alumnus and practicing value investor, David was thrilled to serve as judge alongside esteemed judges Tom Gayner from Markel Corp, Geoff Hulme from Gerber, LLC, Carl Kawaja from Capital Group, Dan Krueger from Owl Creek, Lauren Krueger from KKR, Jason Leder from Leder Fiduciary Capital, James Pan from CP&E Partners, Paul Sonkin, author and adjunct professor at CBS, and Jenny Wallace from Summit Street Capital.

The Artisan International Value Stock Pick Challenge took place on 10 February 2023 as part of the annual CSIMA Conference hosted by Columbia University Student Investment Management Association (CSIMA) and Columbia Business School’s Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing. The value investing focused conference allows students to hear from a variety of speakers from the investment management industry and the Artisan International Value Stock Pick Challenge, sponsored by David Samra, provides an opportunity for students to research and present investment ideas to a panel of industry judges. The selected winner is awarded a cash prize.
